Please tell me I’m not the only person here who has ever used an eye wash station.

I’ve never actually had to use one... probably because I’ve worn glasses since kindergarten- it’s definitely not because I’m careful.

you’re not. about a month ago, someone tampered with a hydraulic door closer in my office, and when I went to figure out why it was slamming closed, I got sprayed in the face with oil because someone had loosened/taken out the bleeder screw.

I take that back... I doused my eyeball with hydraulic fluid in Qatar so I HAD to use an eyewash station, but I was told not to. Why? Because we had finally gotten non-expired saline packets for our eye wash so QA would stop writing us up... thanks Air Force.

Uhm.. I would check your codes. I’m pretty sure they aren’t supposed to have any direct connection at the drain.

Nope, you’re not. Worked at a carwash in college, we learned that the presoak chemical, when applied undiluted to the walls, cleaned the **** out of them. On a rainy evening and bored, I was doing this and watched a drop of it fall behind my glasses and into my eye. Flushed my eye for as long as I could in the eyewash station prying it open myself, ended up driving to the ER with one eye. Next day the phuckwad manager at the time chewed me out for ‘leaving the store unattended’ (I locked up and closed up before I left, and again, it was raining). Thankfully, I was closer with the owner than him and it blew over. Walking out on that jackwagon was my most satisfying end of employment.

I’ve seen them used occasionally but its an occupational hazard of teaching high school science.

I’ve used the other sort of wash station.

When I was in college I tried to use one in one of the labs to get a drink. Never again. That was not fresh water in those pipes...

What led to this?

Please elaborate- is the drain supposed to just remain open to the ground/floor? It’s currently plumbed into the storm water drain from the roof. I’ve never heard any rules regarding the drains...

The drain is plumbed in to the storm water drain from the roof. We got a big deluge that card the storm drains to back up. It happens every so often, and it makes all the drinking fountains and eye washes into geysers. We added anti-backflow valves to the drains, but they do nothing.

Stand alones like that spill to the floor or can be plumbed with air gap between the drain and the tail piece. Codes vary, most don’t allow a direct connection like that. Mainly for reasons like you pictured there.

That makes a lot of sense. Had I needed an eyewash sitting the deluge, I’d have been SOL. I’m going to have to look up the codes now.

Ah....not sure who you could talk to, but someone should put an air gap on the drain line (think having a pipe empty into a funnel that’s connected to the drain)...that way water won’t backstream up into the eyewash...

Definitely going to look into that.
